Learn to make a unique Picassiette mosaic from broken crockery.

As seen on ITV's Katie Piper's Breakfast Show; Picassiette is a term used to describe a style of mosaic art where broken ceramics are pieced together to create something new and beautiful. Recycling is intrinsic to Picassiette, as the broken pieces can no longer be used as a plate or a vase but are repurposed to make something new and interesting. This philosophy is at the heart of what we do at Art4Space as we are always looking for ways to make art and crafts sustainable, while retaining creativity and beauty.

With over 25 years experience running mosaic workshops, we believe mosaic art can be accessible to anyone, whether you see yourself as a creative person or not. Maybe this is why you often find works of mosaic in outsider or naive art, such as the French artist Raymond Isidore and his "La Maison Picassiette". It is often thought that his mosaics were the first to be coined with the term Picassiette. In the 1930s Isidore began obsessively covering his entire property with decorative mosaics of salvaged crockery. Translated from French, the term picassiette means “stolen plate” or “broken plate” but also a “scrounger” or “sponger". So when Isidore was given the nickname “Picassiette” it suggests that his neighbours were not originally enthusiastic about his artworks, however these days La Maison Picassiette gets over 30, 000 visitors a year, all keen to catch a glimpse of his original creations!

In our Picassiette class you will be given different templates to choose from including a cat, bee, beetle or flower. Our experienced and friendly Art4Space tutor will guide you every step of the way, whether you are a beginner or have mosaic experience, so that everyone will leave with a unique Picassiette mosaic to treasure. This is a great hands-on experience with all the materials provided. You are of course welcome to bring your own broken crockery pieces to use in your artwork, but we also have boxes full of broken plates, cups and vases for you to rummage in.

Brilliant workshop! An amazing way to switch off from the noise of life and tune into ‘real me time’ not digital passive screen watching! Felt great to put my hands to real use and create something I felt very proud to take home. Relaxing way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon with supportive tutors ‘Julie and Gemma’ who I learnt a lot from about the art form of Picassiette. I’m looking forward to booking onto another Art4Space workshop. I will defo be recommending to my friends about the local ‘gem’ of an art studio I’ve come across in Stockwell! The studio is full of amazing resources and art inspiration. They even have a beautiful garden to relax in at anytime you fancy a break. The teacher (Daisy) was lovely - very helpful and supportive to us 'non-arty' types. Plenty of equipment and crockery to hand. The only thing I would say is that there didn't seem to be quite enough time to complete the task comfortably. It felt a bit of a rush to get it done. Maybe some smaller, less complex templates would be better. We didn't want to find ourselves with a half finished project, as then we'd be left without the tools and crockery resources to finish it off at home.

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.\
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

I enjoyed so much coming every Thursday to hang out with the group and to discover the artsy part of me that I never though I had on me. So, yes, I'd recommend it to anyone!

Really great place to learn Mosaic, lots of material to hand really enjoyed it, would go again

Good intro to cutting tiles and glass, and flexible approach from the tutors, who are artists so have a hood eye for creating stuff. The only thing I think they missed was safety info; they seemed to not be very into the idea of people wearing protective glasses and didn't let anyone know where the first aid kit was; a few people had minor cuts and I felt they were slightly too relaxed about the health and safety aspects - there were no serious injuries but it would be really easy for a bit of glass shoots into someones eye in this environment.

An absolutely wonderful experience all round.  A fantastic environment, warm welcome and very well organised.  Enough instruction to  safely get started and proactive encouragement and help to ensure we all got a really nice result to take home.  Materials were plentiful,  the atmosphere was supportive and enthusiastic - I didn’t want to leave!100% recommend and also an very chuffed with my mosaic tile!

Really enjoyed my mosaic  taster session. Lots of choice and really helpful guidance meant that I left with a mosaic that I’m really happy with. The session was run alongside the longer 5 or 10 week classes so was nice to see what is achievable with a bit more time/expertise.

Did the taster mosaic and tile making class and it was so much fun! Everyone was super friendly, the people doing the longer courses are also there and you get to see the cool stuff they have been doing which is quite encouraging.! Eli the teacher is a total vibe, making you feel comfortable to explore your creativity yet guiding you when needed without feeling like you’re an outcast as it’s your first time.

I really enjoyed this mosaic class. There was a friendly atmosphere and the session was well facilitated. It was my first time trying mosaic making but still managed to go home with a lovely handmade gift that I was really pleased with! It was a fun evening!

An enjoyable  and supported first time mosaic experience.  There is an abundance of materials to choose from and be creative with.  Great to see the different  projects being worked on in the class. I plan to return to complete a larger mosaic/tile project.

I really enjoyed the class, and I'm really pleased with the mosaic tile I made! The course leader was encouraging and helpful, with just the right amount of tuition to get us started. I was also able to use some shells I'd brought with me. I'd hoped to make a photo frame but a mosaic tile was the only option - I didn't mind, so I didn't feel the need to ask if we could make any other item. There were plenty of materials and colours available, with books for inspiration. It helped to have an idea of the colours and design I wanted to make beforehand. The glass of wine and snacks were a bonus and the venue is great. It's worth noting that there's not time to grout your design (and you'd want the glue to dry beforehand anyway) so you are given a little grouting kit to do it at home.

I enjoyed this class & love my mosaic tile. I was a bit rushed at the end but the tutor helped me finish my piece. At times could've done with a bit more direction. It was a lovely setting and so many bits of glass and ceramics to choose from and lots of inspiring pieces around the place!

This was a great taster session at the right level for a total beginner.  An amazing treasure trove of tiles and trinkets to use. Really enjoyable.

Nice relaxed atmosphere, an enjoyable evening making mosaics!

Very clear instructions and you can get stuck in straight away. It was nice to walk away with a completed piece (you do have to grout the tile at home but this is quite straight forward). A glass of wine and some nibbles were provided which was a nice touch.

Great class and great discovery for this new hobby and/or passion. The Host was gave such a warm welcome and invited us to visit the venue.
They do such amazing projects there and I love that I pushed myself to discover all this new world.
I already a book a class for next week and invited a firend of mine to share this experience and thinking to start a proper course in September.
They also organize birthday, Hen parties.. and so may diversified activities.

The class was very good! I learnt how to cut tiles, plan a design and then glue the tiles together. I got a kit to take home and grout my piece with, then it’s all ready! I wish there was a continuation class!

I took my mum to the mosaics making class for a birthday present and we both had such a lovely evening. The teacher, Louise, was really friendly and enthusiastic, the studio is a beautiful inspiring space to create away an evening in. Hugely recommend!

The class was a great chance to enjoy a creative evening in an informal setting. The Tuesday evening time and location were also ideal for a post-work crafting session. A brief explanation on cutting and mosaic-ing was given, and we were then free to design and create the mosaic tile as we wished.

The class was well run, in a nice space and by a knowledgeable teacher. I would definitely recommend it for some chilled out creative time.

My friend and I really enjoyed the workshop. The teacher was great, really enthusiastic and interested in what we were making. She was kind enough to stay back an extra 30-40 minutes after the class, so that we could complete our mosaic tile. I will definitely recommend this class! 5 star from me!

I booked this class with a work friend and we went in totally open minded with no expectations. We were welcomed so warmly (on a freezing cold Thurs evening) by Natalie who was super friendly and offered us some drinks while we settled into our space. The introduction was so informing, easy-to-grasp and perfectly timed. We were able to get stuck in right away which was great! Natty explained the use of the tools and different types of tiles very well while reminding us of safety. We worked on creating different shapes and she assisted each one of us individually when we got stuck (which was often) and totally made us at ease when we got frustrated trying to get it right. We got to design our own tile with mosaic using our own ideas. Natty was so sweet to stay behind way past the finishing time to let us complete our mosaic and she helped us complete it to ensure we left with a complete piece as well as giving us the grout to fill in at home with full instructions. Hands down I would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a bit of fun while doing something relaxing especially after a long day at work... 11 out of 10 from me!

What a great set-up! I went with a friend to the one off evening workshop. We have both come away with beautiful tiles. You are supplied with a glass of wine or a soft drink for the evening and the choice of decorative chips to break up and decorate your tile with is huge. Really loved it.

The class was sublime! This was my first experience of mosaics and there were others there who had been before and were working on their pieces. Natty, our tutor, was patient, knowledgable, very encouraging and had great snacks! The workshop was a veritable feast for the eyes with plenty of inspiration from the many mosaics displayed and the seemingly never ending supply of tiles in every single colour you could imagine. I did a one off class during the evening (6.30pm - 9.00pm) and really enjoyed the class.
The teacher (Aliya) was absolutely lovely.  Friendly, patient and really encouraging.    The first half hour was spent practising using the cutters and how to space, and then she let us get on with our designs.

There were a few people who had been there before and were working on bigger, more intricate pieces too.

Everyone looked really happy and it was a great way to spend an evening.  I was absolutely delighted with how my creation turned out.

Art4Space was very generous with what tiles and tools you can use, and there were even refreshments on offer.

You’ll head home with your finished painted canvas.
- **Sat 21st March 1.30 pm - 4 pm: Gleaming glazes:** Learn glazing skills and pottery painting techniques using gorgeous colours! If you're looking for a creative workshop and learning glazing techniques, look no further than this pottery painting and glazing experience. You can create up to 2 finished pieces and choose between plates, bowls and mugs that we provide. Receive your finished piece around 6-8 weeks after your workshop.

- **Sat 25th April 10 am - 12.30 pm: Picassiette:** Learn to make a unique Picassiette mosaic from broken crockery.
- **Sat 25th April 1.30 pm - 4 pm: Mixed media nature painting**: You will have the chance to explore with inks, acrylic pens, gold leafing, and collaging as you become immersed with botanical inspiration to paint on canvas.
- **Sat 9th May 10.30 am - 12 pm: Terrarium - Spring theme:** Relax, plant, decorate, and destress in our spring creative terrarium building class.
- **Sat 16th May 1.30 pm - 4 pm: Spiral Bowl Handbuilding Pottery:** Join us for a relaxing evening with terracotta clay and get hands-on in this beginner-friendly pottery class. Receive your finished piece around 6-8 weeks after your workshop.
- **Sun 17th May 1.30 pm- 4 pm:** **Paint lemons on Canvas:** Complete with lemon treats and snacks. Paint lemons on canvas with acrylic paints.
- **Sat 23rd May 1 pm - 3.30 pm: Beginners Macramé Wall Hanging:** Create your own beautiful macramé wall hanging in this relaxing, hands-on workshop!
- **Sat 6th June 10 am - 12.30 pm: Terracotta plant holder and Macramé holder:** Explore hand-building techniques to create mini terracotta pots with macrame holder. Receive your finished pot around 6-8 weeks after your workshop.
- **Sat 13th June 10 am - 12.30 pm: Mosaic tile:** Learn mosaic techniques from experienced craft teachers. Choose from a wide range of vibrant tiles to create your own design on a mosaic tile.
- **Sat 13th June 1.30 pm - 4 pm: Decal transfer:** Decals are made of special glass transfer paper printed with the desired image or pattern using ceramic pigments. Working with transfers onto ceramic, also known as decals, involves applying pre-printed designs onto the surface of the ceramic plates/bowls. We have a vast selection to choose from! Receive your finished piece around 6-8 weeks after your workshop.

- **Sat 4th July 1.30 pm - 4 pm:** **Paint the colourful 90’s on Canvas:** Join us for a fun, nostalgic painting class in London, complete with party snacks and cheesy 90s music. We will be creating big, bold, colourful patterns and shapes on canvas with acrylic paints.
- **Sat 5th September 1.30 pm - 4 pm: Textured Abstract painting on Canvas:** Create a mesmerising piece of artwork using acrylic paints, textured mediums, and gold leafing on canvas.
The price includes the workshop, materials, snacks with a glass of wine/bottle of beer if desired and unlimited coffee and tea, plus 10% off in our studio shop.

Proceeds go towards our community art projects, providing mental well-being and creative health, especially for those facing barriers.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Great tutors. Learned something I had never done before and took home something I was proud of. When I walked into the studio I was like wow such a great vibe. Will book again and maybe gift one of these workshops to a friend.

What a wonderful experience! I would highly recommend taking a class at Art 4 Space if you need some calm creative time in an environment with incredibly welcoming gentle people. Plus, you get take take home your creations to treasure (or chuckle at) for evermore!

I had a very pleasant evening at Art4Space where I attended a Kintsugi class led by 2 lovely woman.  Very nice group of people, great atmosphere. I had fun trying to piece together a piece of pottery, while sipping a glass of wine and eating tea cakes. I’ll definitely recommend Art4Space classes and will try their mosaic classes next. 


Very relaxing session. Gemma the tutor was great at making us feel relaxed and  very welcome. I got to make a rainbow to take home. The studio was a very clean and spacious space. There were also refreshments for us as well. I will certainly be looking out for another workshop to book.
